Hardwood species

The hardwood species you choose to go with will determine the durability and overall performance. Of course, you need to match the species with the traffic level in your home. For instance, if you’re looking to cover the flooring in your entrance, or the room in which people gather the most, you’ll want something that can stand up to that amount of traffic. For areas like these, the harder the wood, the better.

For other areas that see very little traffic, you can go with a softer wood and still get a good lifespan out of the product. However, you will want to use protection under furniture legs, and make use of area rugs to cut down on contact with dirt and debris.

Your hardwood finish

Many homeowners think their only option for a wood floor finish is the classic, shiny surface. With an almost mirror-like glow, this is by far one of the most popular finishes that can be placed on these floors. In fact, it’s just about the only one used in many higher end homes and commercial spaces.

However, there are other options you should definitely know about, as their benefits might be just what you need. Vintage or hand scraped finishes, for instance, go a long way in covering up some of the light damage that can occur to your floors over the course of time. You’re much less likely to be able to see small scratches, scuffs, and dings by choosing this finish for your hardwood floors.
